Ces fonctions sont\u00a0: la croissance, la diff\u00e9renciation, la r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 la famine ou au stress oxydatif, la mort cellulaire programm\u00e9e et le renouvellement des composants intracellulaires endommag\u00e9s. Ainsi, en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 une privation de nutriments, d&rsquo;acides amin\u00e9s, de facteurs de croissance ou d&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne, l&rsquo;autophagie est induite pour fournir une autre source d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie aux cellules \u00e0 partir du mat\u00e9riel cellulaire recycl\u00e9 afin de les aider \u00e0 survivre. Elle est donc consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme un \u00e9l\u00e9ment cl\u00e9 de la r\u00e9ponse adaptative des cellules et des organismes au stress. En effet, elle favorise la survie jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que les nutriments soient \u00e0 nouveau disponibles. D\u2019une part, l\u2019autophagie importante induite permettra \u00e9galement aux cellules canc\u00e9reuses et non canc\u00e9reuses de s\u2019adapter et de survivre. D\u2019autre part, si les autres processus induits lors d\u2019un je\u00fbne long ne d\u00e9gradent pas suffisamment la grande majorit\u00e9 de la tumeur, alors l\u2019augmentation des facteurs de croissance qui a lieu lors de la reprise de l\u2019alimentation.
